warp and weft are the directions of the two wires that intertwine to form a weave: the weft in the width direction, the warp in the length direction. Weaving looms, with their shuttle and reed, operate on this principle.
We’re not talking about a grand tapestry, as Morton Feldman sometimes called it, or a systematic weaving process. Warp and weft takes the pretext of a particular state of matter – like other of my pieces (plasma, grains, slices, etc.) – to escape from the time of long tensions. Its form is based on fragmentary tensions, achieved locally through harmonic contrasts and textures of short, rapid repetition, like stitches.
warp and weft is imbued with Persian culture – one may recognize in it some of the characteristic articulations of the santoor – and is dedicated to Nina Maghsoodloo.
